San's hooves gently struck the soft dirt of the path, beating out a constant rhythm that soothed his racing mind. He attempted to focus on the repetitive motion of his legs, forcing his thoughts away from heavier subjects. Dappled light painted itself across the landscape, providing further distractions. It was mesmerizing, the way the shadows were never still. These were not sinister patches of darkness; they were a work of art, splayed about the forest for his own viewing pleasure. A sigh escaped the stallion's muzzle, and the physical expression of relaxation was a shock to him.
There had been little to make him happy as of late, what with the nightmares raging against him whenever he so much as closed his eyes. The cries of helpless yearlings, the startling stillness the death brought to the formerly living, the mindless running as he tried to flee the destruction he had caused... The sigh turned into a shaky gasp as he struggled to derail that train of thought. He was unable to distinguish whether the vivid flashbacks were depictions of what had actually happened or rather his own mind running rampant, as it had taken to doing. When he focused enough, he could feel his alter's consciousness pressing against the edges of his thoughts, ready to pounce the moment the opportunity presented itself. With a gentle shake of his head, San chased away the fear that arose whenever he remembered the constant threat of Kir.
And although he had begun to think of other things, the forest wasn't nearly as enjoyable as before. Each rustling bush concealed some hidden predator. Unimaginable dangers lurked in the once-beautiful shadows. The entire world was full of hostilities, but perhaps the most dastardly enemy was the one that lay waiting inside San's own head. His breathing and pace increased until he was moving at a shaky trot, eager to reach the next clearing and escape grasp of the forest, the solace it had held for him now shattered.
