Adelaid had left her herd in search of greener pastures. Unfortunately, the land that she had wandered in to seemed devoid of them. It was gloomy and filled with a clinging fog. While the land here could provide sustenance, it did not help to put Adelaid in an emotionally proper place. With rising anxiety, she searched on past the mountain and the valley. She weaved her way carefully through a swamp, and had emerged on the other side unscathed. The sweet-scented landscape seemed more to Adelaid's liking.
A path stretched before the timid kardunn. Trees with leaves of all colors stood on either side, silent sentinels to a new land. Adelaid's nervousness began to fade away with each step. With cautiously pleased look on her face she raised her bright eyes to the tree tops, and searched for the sky between the leaves. The air here was thick with fresh, earthy, and flowery scents.
Overcome with joy, Adelaid flicked her tail and whinnied. She tossed her head and pranced down the path. She followed the winding path, lost its splendor.
Her reverie was broken by a sound from the woods on either side of her. She came to an immediate halt; her eyes went wide, and she swiveled her ear in the direction of the sound. The young mare heard several twigs snap, and the sound of swishing leaves and bushes. There was something in the woods- but what? Panic gripped at Adelaid's heart. She jerked her head in the direction of the sounds and lashed her long tail. She saw a shadow move just beyond the edge of the wood, and a moment later a buck stepped out onto the path. It trotted straight toward Adelaid with its head down.
Adelaid kicked out angrily with her hind legs and snorted in alarm. She cantered off, and the deer took off at full speed after her.
"Go away!" she whinnied, spinning around once she had put enough distance between her and her pursuer. She nodded her head in an exaggerated manner, flashing her two white horns threateningly.
The deer was not frightened by her display. It did not stop, and continued running toward her, bucking its head and snorting. With another frightened kick and whinny, Adelaid ran off down the path.
"Leave me alone!" she shouted.
